Isn't it totally awesome when you design an outfit in your mind and then when you put it together in reality, it exceeds your expectations? More often than not, that's not the case. Things that I think will look great in my mind don't always come off the way I'd hoped in person. But today was a lovely exception.
(I waited until too late to take my pictures, so the lighting and exposure is a little funky. It's a shame too, because I think they're pretty cool shots.)
Not to sound too repetitive, but this is yet another item from my to-be-altered pile. Once upon a time, this was a flowy Gap dress that I got a Goodwill a few months back for $3. It was okay as a dress, but a little too much plaid and I wasn't crazy about the fit, especially after it shrank like crazy when I washed it.

So, I lopped off the top, threw a little elastic in the waist and added the belt that I shortened the other day. Paired up with a deep V tee and some big hoops and I'm in love. It's like ... urban prairie? Maybe?
Anyway, I'm really happy with the outcome. Which is lucky, because I'm not big on measuring and what-not. If you've ever watched the Muppet Show (seriously, who hasn't?), I swear I'm the Swedish Chef of sewing. "La-la-la, snip, snip, snip, la-la-la, sew, tear, snip, la-la-la..." Well, you get the picture.
Kyla! It's so great!! Urban prairie, it is!! You look so good in these long skirts- its the whole hour-glass thing you have going on. So, so cute!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! Fab as always.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, Swedish Chef was my favorite cereal for like a whole year when I was a kid! :-)
Love love love!!!! this is super cute! I just love wen creative juices are flowing and u get a great masterpiece!!
ReplyDeleteNot too sound too repetitive but once again you have presented another fab look:-) And man, how big is the pile that you have? you keep bringing out gems from there. I think the skirt looks so much better, the dress would have been an overdose of plaid.
ReplyDeleteOh how pretty, i have to say that i really love that v neck shirt, i have a THING for grey shirts, and that one you;re wearing is lovely! so is the skirt, how gorgeous did your skirt come out! i am in total love with it! i wish i could have seen it when it was a dress, i love plaid.
ReplyDeleteYou look gorgeous as usual, another awesome outfit =D
This is so gorgeous, Kyla. I love it. The whole look is so completely "you", which is awesome (and stylish and beautiful and a whole slew of other great adjectives!). It looks fantastic!!
ReplyDeleteI really dig this skirt! Is it able to be worn as a strapless sundress, too, maybe?
ReplyDeleteAnd LOL at the Swedish Chef reference, he's hilarious!
I feel like you should be running through "The Clothes Horse"'s fields that she normally takes pictures in, or side saddling a horse...Or lying under a tree with a unicorn nuzzling your head.
ReplyDeleteYEP! Unicorn, this is what would complete the look...I knew something was missing!
"Bort bort bort..." (Swedish Chef)
Love the dress! Esp. love the analogy! LOL
ReplyDeleteLooking pretty damn good, girlfriend!
Ha! Love how you transformed the dress to a skirt. Great proportions too on balancing out the fullness of the skirt with the v-neck tee and full belt. Wonderful!!
ReplyDeletenow i feel inspired to rip up my clothes. i also have a pile of things that need to be altered.
ReplyDeleteI think it was probably plaid overload as a dress, but it looks lovely as a skirt. Great job!
ReplyDeleteYou are a riot! The Swedish Chef of sewing? For reals, that's maybe the funniest thing I've read all week. I know EXACTLY how that feels. I am not so great with all the measuring and sewing what-nots!
ReplyDeleteLOVE LOVE LOVE THIS!!!!
ReplyDeleteSomething about having a skirt that is long enough to cover your toes that is so perfect. You are pretty much the queen of fixing lately, huh? Looks awesome!
ReplyDeleteWow - you really have amazing style and a great ability to sew and create!
ReplyDeleteOh my! LOVE that skirts!! Cute outfit :]
ReplyDeletereally love this! i don't think i would personally pick out this skirt for myself..but after seeing it on you..maybe so!!
